On September 30, a federal judge upheld the USDA's New Swine Inspection System. The idea of the system is to have faster processing-line speeds and give employees a bigger role in the inspection process.

An effort funded by the Swine Health Information Center (SHIC) that’s aimed at increasing swine disease prevention and preparedness is developing a methodology to communicate with project participants whenever a swine disease is occurring in the region near their sites.

The Ag Economy Barometer (by Purdue University/CME Group) farmer sentiment index declined 5 points to a reading of 112 in September. The primary reason was the producers' weakened perception of current conditions – in other words,  concerns about input costs and  availability.
