A couple of human errors… 🤦 swine o'clock Sep 14, 2022

Viruses, including the African Swine Fever (ASF), have been shown to live in and be transmitted through animal feed – as was found in a recent study conducted by Kansas State University professor and veterinarian Dr. Jordan Gehardt, that assessed viral transmission from people and feed trucks.

  • Since human error was verified to be the biggest cause of viral proliferation, it seems that increased biosecurity protocols related to the movement of people and vehicles may be the industry’s best def...

Swine Health Information Center Associate Director Dr. Megan Niederwerder says that research conducted at Kansas State University’s High Containment Biosecurity Research Institute has determined the longevity of the African swine fever (ASF) viral DNA and how long it remains infectious in stored feed particles.

There’s a lot of truth to that claim: Courtney Knupp, the National Pork Board's Vice President of International Market Development, said the success of the growing markets for U.S. pork is thanks to NPB’s strategic partnership with USMEF to promote diverse market cuts, including variety meats and muscle cuts (check out more about that here).

  • Surging exports have made Mexico the leading market for U.S. pork (read more about it here). The exports to the country remained at a record pace in June...

Debunking a myth? 🔎 swine o'clock Sep 14, 2022

A new book by Jayne Buxton, a British-based investigative journalist, digs into the concept that plant-based food is the best for one's health – and proves why it will neither improve your health nor save the planet.

  • Buxton sets out to answer two questions: (1) what if the idea that plant-only diets will improve our health and save the planet is misleading – or even false, and (2) what if removing animal foods is actually a threat?

Contrary to what consumers are bombarded with, the book dr...

The situation is getting off tracks 🚉 swine o'clock Sep 14, 2022

U.S. railroad delays have been a growing problem for shipping agricultural goods all year. The situation between rail carriers and workers is tense, labor discussions are ongoing, and the grain industry is concerned about a possible labor stoppage.

  • Meanwhile, rail workers are placing the blame on the railroads, saying there’s a culture of profits over safety, custom...
