๐Ÿ“ƒ The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) intends to update its water pollution rules for slaughterhouses for the first time in nearly 20 years! The proposed standards are set to be published by the end of the year and finalized by 2025 – they follow a lawsuit from environmental groups that argue current standards are too weak.

     • Under the US Clean Water Act, the agency regulates wastewater discharge from meat and poultry plants into nearby lakes and streams, which neighboring communities – mostly populated by low-income residents and minorities – have increasingly complained have dirtied their environment and drinking water.

๐Ÿ‘€ Considering that just 300 of the nation's 7,000 meat plants are covered by existing standards, the plan is – supposedly – a move to protect those communities. Read more about the whole issue here.
