They may not be Earth’s mightiest heroes, but they’re the US’ brightest line of defense when it comes to agriculture. Infectious disease experts from 18 federal agencies and academic institutions met to discuss working together to combat the viruses, bacteria, and other emerging pathogens that threaten the nation's agricultural economy, food supply, wildlife, and public health.

  • That was the first membership meeting of RAV3N – Research Alliance for Veterinary Science and Biodefense BSL-3 Network, a national network of biosafety level-3 labs engaged in biodefense research on infectious animal diseases, supported and funded by the USDA.
  • The gathering was at Texas A&M University's Global Health Research Complex, which serves as the network's headquarters.

The focus of the workshop was determining how the federal and academic labs across the country can cooperate to improve detection and responses to emerging pathogens.
