Swine Nutrition Blackbelt #17 - Compensatory gain following nutrient restriction - how well can pigs recover?

Covid caused a lot of issues in the swine industry that we were unprepared for especially in regard to meat packing plants shutting down for periods of time leaving farmers with no one to sell their pigs at market weight. Hopefully something like this will never happen again, but if it does it is important we are prepared and have a plan in place. In this episode I talked with Chloe Hagen about her study where she fed nutrient restricted diets to grow-finish pigs to measure how it affected time to market as well as the potential of compensatory gain following the nutrient restricted period.

Meet the guest: Chloe Hagen is a Ph.D. student at Iowa State University. She received her both B.S. and M.S. from ISU in 2020 and 2022 respectively. She was also a nutrition intern for Christensen Farms back in 2019 and is currently doing an internship as a swine nutrition intern for Cargill. Her M.S. thesis focused on the effects of floor space and lysine restricted diets on the growth rate of finishing pigs and compensatory gain analysis.
