Pigs and their vitamins

A Kansas State University postdoctoral student, Jamil Faccin, is conducting research to update the swine industry’s production standards and aid producers in formulating their swine diets with more accuracy.

  • In 2018, vitamin shortages in swine production resulted in lower  inclusion rates in the diet. According to Faccin, it’s unclear if the rates were ever increased after the shortage was over.

  • After surveying nutritionists from various production systems and supply companies, the veterinarian found considerable variation among responses. The conclusion was that most respondents use higher levels of vitamins and trace minerals in all production phases, as well as increased levels of chelated and organic sources.

The bottom line is: we need to focus on new research that tests actual production standards in order to be more precise when adding vitamins and trace minerals to pig diets. More about the study will be presented at Kansas State University’s Swine Day – find out more about it here.
