๐Ÿ’ก The antimicrobial properties of fatty acids have been known since the late 1800s – and even though their role in feed applications was previously overlooked in favor of antibiotics, they are now under the spotlight. Particularly, medium chain functional lipids are of special interest due to their broad and varied activities – despite the name "medium", their number of uses is nothing short of extra large!

โœ… Medium chain monoglycerides and fatty acids can be antimicrobial, antiviral, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory (including having effects against enveloped viruses as well as gram positive and gram-negative bacteria).

     • They can also lower the pH inside and outside cells, thus decreasing pathogen toxin production, interfering with pathogen adhesion, and disrupting cell-to-cell signaling. As far as the environment goes, it’s not only made less favorable for pathogens, but also more welcoming of good bacteria – namely lactic acid producing bacteria.
