Ukraine's 2023 wheat sowing area might fall by 30% to 40% due to a lack of funds and loss of areas occupied by the war.

  • The country is a global major wheat grower and exporter, but wheat yield next year could stay relatively low due to a possible decrease in fertilizer use.
  • According to Agriculture Minister Mykola Solsky, the sown area will also decrease due to the Russian invasion – during which many hectares have been occupied.
  • Ukraine has said its 2022 grain harvest could fall to around 50 million tonnes from a record 86 million tonnes in 2021.
