Hey! There's pork DNA in your halal… 🧬🐷

🌭 Though that's harder to spot than a hairstring, the Russian veterinary watchdog Rosselhoznadzor has managed to do it! The halal industry in Central Asia, a predominantly Muslim-populated former part of the Soviet Union, is under scrutiny after the organization claims to have found pork DNA in a batch of halal sausages imported from Kyrgyzstan.

     • The supposed pork DNA could've made its way into halal products either because it was stored on an adjacent shelf or the treatment of meat processing equipment was insufficient.

🤔🔎 The people involved say that the pig industry hasn't been doing exceptionally well in Central Asia, so fraud couldn't be ruled out in this situation. On the other hand, the Russian side isn't exactly trustworthy either – this isn't the first time Rosselhoznadzor has complained about the quality of Kyrgyz food, so there may be some ulterior motives lying underneath.
