๐Ÿท๐Ÿš› In the US, about 0.7% of commercial pigs become injured or die while being transported. The causes range from handling to driving distances, but among all factors, ambient temperature seems to be the most important one – from June to September, when ambient temperatures are typically high, record death rates are registered. So here are some ideas of how you can minimize the problem:

  • Schedule transportation during early mornings or evenings; load in proper group size; make sure pig density is within the recommended range; keep loading and unloading times to a minimum; spray pigs using large drops of water; make sure the destination is expecting the truck; have a back-up plan in case re-routing is required or if the truck  breaks down, etc.
