The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has taken a look at the risk of spread of antimicrobial resistance among poultry, swine, and cattle during transportation between farms or to slaughterhouses

๐Ÿ” Their findings?

  • Appropriate transportation organization is key: the faster the animals are transported and the more thoroughly the vehicles, equipment, and loading/unloading spaces are cleaned, the more the transmission of resistant bacteria is reduced.

  • Animal health and welfare, and biosecurity before and after are also important.

๐Ÿงซ Beyond animal health: when bacteria become resistant to antimicrobials, effective treatment of infectious diseases in humans can be compromised too.
