Are Brazilian exports struggling to score a goal?

swine o'clock Sep 08, 2022

In the first seven months of 2022, Brazilian exports were faced with a 5% decline compared with a year earlier.

  • Brazilian exports have fallen in China, but even so, the Asian country remains its main destination – taking nearly a third of Brazil’s pig meat exports.

As with the UK (see the news above) and so many other exporters, diversification has been the order of the day with China. And Brazil’s pig meat exports to other Asian countries have grown.

  • Notable increases include exports to the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, Venezuela, and Argentina.

Additionally, numbers suggest that more Brazilian pig meat is being consumed domestically – and this evidences the importance of the domestic market.

  • Export volumes can therefore be sensitive to Brazil’s own economic fortunes. After struggling during the 2020-2021 period, the country has been regaining strength in this respect.
