A bright future (possibly… hopefully!) 🤞

🇺🇲🐷 Domestic pork demand has been robust over the past two years and the US has been maintaining its position as one of the most cost-efficient pork producers in the world. Pretty amazing, right? However… According to the National Pork Producers Council (NPPC), a bright future will depend on:

     • Consumer pork demand: incomes continue to decline, but if pork remains affordable (and delicious!), things should work out just fine.

     • Projected growth: hog slaughter could potentially be down in the first half of this year, but  growth is expected in the fourth quarter.

     • Labor shortages: existing US workforce will not be able to offset pork industry shortages, so ag visa reform must be a top priority this year.

     • Production costs: the cost of raising hogs in the US has increased. Nevertheless, we still have one of the lowest costs of feed, labor and variable expenses in the world.

     • Ripple effects: estimates are that the pork industry supports the country and gives economic contributions well beyond the farm.
